Weighted Pullups: How to Start, Progress, and Get Seriously Strong

Bodyweight pullups are not the finish line.

For many people, pullups become an exercise they stop taking seriously once they can do a decent number of reps. They move on to heavier rows or pulldowns, or start treating pullups as a warmup.

I think that is a mistake.

If you can do 10 clean pullups, you do not need to abandon the movement. You need to make it harder.

That is where weighted pullups come in.

My general rule is simple:

Once you can do 10 clean bodyweight pullups, start adding weight.

I have trained pullups this way for years. My best weighted pullup was performed with 180 pounds added using a neutral grip, starting from a dead hang and finishing with my chin clearly above the handles.

Weighted pullups respond well to the same principles that work for other major strength lifts:

  • Consistent form
  • Progressive overload
  • Enough rest
  • Tracking your numbers
  • Small, repeatable improvements

Weighted Pullups: Quick Answers

When should you start weighted pullups?
Once you can perform about 10 clean bodyweight pullups.

How much weight should you start with?
About 10 pounds is a practical starting point for most people. Use the smallest convenient increases as you progress.

How many reps should you do?
I generally use a 3–10 rep range. When you reach 10 clean reps, increase the weight.

How many sets should you do?
About five working sets is a good starting point.

How long should you rest?
Around 2–3 minutes for normal weighted sets. For very heavy sets, I may rest closer to 5 minutes.

What is the best way to add weight?
I prefer a dip belt. A weighted vest is my second choice, while holding a dumbbell between the feet is much less stable and harder to progress.

What grip should you use?
I recommend neutral grip as the default for heavy weighted pullups because I find it strong and easier on the elbows.

When Should You Start Weighted Pullups?

My usual threshold is 10 clean bodyweight pullups.

Ten is not a magical cutoff. It is simply a useful point where bodyweight pullups have become easy enough that adding external resistance makes sense.

By “clean,” I mean:

  • Start from a dead hang
  • Do not kick or kip
  • Finish with your chin clearly above the bar or handles
  • Keep the rep controlled enough that it can be measured consistently

If you cannot yet do 10 clean reps, keep building your bodyweight pullups first.

Good Progression Requires Good Data

One of the most important ideas in my training is that progression depends on useful data.

A partial rep can still make you stronger. A swinging rep can still be difficult. The problem is that these reps become much harder to compare from one workout to the next.

If last week you did +70 pounds for five clean reps and this week you did +70 for six, that is easy to interpret.

But what if the sixth rep involved a large swing? What if your range of motion was noticeably shorter?

Did you actually get stronger?

Maybe. But your data is worse.

That is why I try to keep my range of motion, grip, technique, equipment, and set structure reasonably consistent.

The more variables you can standardize, the easier it is to tell whether you are progressing.

What Weight Should You Start With?

For most people, I would start with about 10 pounds added.

That is partly practical. A 10-pound plate is common in most commercial gyms.

The more important rule is:

Use the smallest convenient increase that keeps you progressing.

If someone performs +25 pounds for 10 reps for the first time, I would normally recommend the smallest convenient jump rather than immediately making a huge increase.

Progress does not need to be dramatic.

One extra rep counts.

Five more pounds counts.

The goal is constant progress, no matter how small.

My Weighted Pullup Form Standard

My weighted pullup standard is the same as my bodyweight standard:

  • Start from a dead hang
  • No deliberate kicking or swinging
  • Chin clearly above the bar or handles
  • Lower yourself under normal control

I accept that some form breakdown can happen on very heavy sets.

But I still want the rep to look like a pullup.

The point is not to make your body perfectly motionless. The point is to keep the movement standardized enough that your numbers still mean something.

My Main Technique Cue

If I had to give one cue for heavy weighted pullups, it would be:

Drive your elbows down.

I find that more useful than thinking about pulling my body upward.

The Best Grip for Weighted Pullups

For serious weighted pullup training, my default recommendation is a neutral grip.

It is my strongest grip, and I have also found it substantially easier on my elbows.

Overhand pullups are completely fine if they feel good for you. But as my added weight increased, heavy overhand work caused noticeably more elbow soreness.

For me, that became much more apparent around 70 pounds of added weight.

The soreness usually appears in the days after training rather than during the workout itself.

The two things that have helped me most are:

  • Using a neutral grip
  • Rest

If overhand pullups feel good and you are progressing, there is no reason you have to stop using them.

How to Progress Weighted Pullups

My weighted pullup progression is simple:

  • If you reach 10 reps, add weight
  • If you get 3–9 reps, keep working at a productive load
  • If you cannot get 3 clean reps, the load is probably too heavy

I generally take my main sets to 10 reps or technical failure, whichever comes first.

Technical failure means the next rep would require obvious cheating, shortened range of motion, or excessive momentum.

Increase Weight During the Same Workout

If I reach 10 reps, I usually increase the weight on the next set.

I do not necessarily wait until the next workout.

For example:

  • +10 × 10
  • +15 × 10
  • +20 × 8
  • +20 × 7
  • +20 × 6

That is a perfectly good weighted pullup workout.

On the next workout, the goal is simply to improve those numbers.

Maybe you get:

  • +10 × 10
  • +15 × 10
  • +20 × 9
  • +20 × 7
  • +20 × 6

That is progress.

Eventually:

  • +10 × 10
  • +15 × 10
  • +20 × 10
  • +25 × 7
  • +25 × 6

Now the load has increased.

A Beginner Weighted Pullup Workout

If you are new to weighted pullups, keep the program simple.

Warmup

Bodyweight pullups: 1 × 10

Main Work

Perform about five weighted sets.

For each set:

  • Stop at 10 reps or technical failure
  • Add weight after a set of 10
  • Keep the working sets mostly in the 3–10 rep range

That is enough to begin making progress.

You do not need the amount of volume I use in my own training.

How I Train Weighted Pullups

I have trained pullups for a long time, so my normal workouts involve much more weight and volume than I would recommend to a beginner or intermediate lifter.

A realistic session for me might look like:

  • Bodyweight × 10
  • +45 × 10
  • +70 × 10
  • +90 × 10
  • +115 × 10
  • +135 × 5
  • +90 × 10

I almost always begin with bodyweight pullups and ramp toward a heavier top set.

If I cannot reach 10 reps at the top weight, I may perform multiple sets at that weight.

I also sometimes perform backdown sets, where I reduce the load after the heaviest work and accumulate additional volume.

Do not copy those exact numbers. The important part is the structure.

Ramp Toward a Top Weight

A normal progression might look like:

  • Bodyweight × 10
  • +25 × 10
  • +45 × 10
  • +70 × 8
  • +70 × 7
  • +45 × 10

You gradually increase the difficulty until you reach your heavier working sets.

Then, if you want more volume, you can reduce the weight again.

Use Convenient Plate Combinations

Once you become strong enough to use substantial weight, convenience matters.

In commercial gyms, I usually use plates with a dip belt.

If the target load is around 100 pounds, exactly 100 pounds may be less convenient than 90.

Two 45-pound plates give you 90 pounds with only two plates. Reaching exactly 100 may require several smaller plates that take up more chain space and move around more.

There is nothing special about hitting a mathematically round number.

Choose a load that is practical to set up.

What Rep Range Should You Use?

I like the 3–10 rep range for weighted pullups.

My ramp-up sets are often sets of 10.

Once I reach heavier weights, I especially enjoy challenging myself in the 3–5 rep range.

I do not perform many singles or doubles.

One reason is that on a very heavy single, it is easy to subconsciously use a small amount of leg movement or momentum to complete the rep.

That becomes harder to hide from yourself during a longer set.

I would rather build strength through consistent, measurable training than constantly test a one-rep maximum.

My heaviest weighted pullup emerged during normal training. I did not run a special peaking cycle for it.

How Long Should You Rest?

For most beginner and intermediate weighted sets, 2–3 minutes is a reasonable starting point.

As the weights get heavier, I rest longer.

For heavy triples or similarly difficult sets, I may rest closer to 5 minutes.

The goal is not to minimize rest.

The goal is to recover enough that the next set gives you useful information about your strength.

Should You Track Bodyweight?

I personally record added weight, not total system weight.

Bodyweight obviously matters in pullups, but measuring it precisely inside the gym can become impractical.

You can walk into the gym at one weight, sweat and lose some water, drink water and gain some back, and leave at another weight.

I do not want to pretend that 10 reps at a bodyweight of 200 pounds is meaningful progress over 10 reps at 199.

If your bodyweight changes substantially over time, it is reasonable to keep a rough idea of it.

Knowing that you are around 190 rather than 210 pounds provides useful context.

I just would not obsess over small day-to-day fluctuations.

Best Equipment for Weighted Pullups

Dip Belt: My Preferred Option

A dip belt is my favorite way to add weight.

It is:

  • Easy to adjust
  • Stable
  • Capable of holding heavy loads
  • Convenient when increasing weight between sets

The belt I use is the Harbinger Polypro Dip Belt.

I have used mine for roughly eight years and have personally hung as much as 225 pounds from it.

I do modify the hardware, however.

I have broken clips on dip belts while using more than 100 pounds. The rings at the ends of the belt can also become weak points.

I replace all three connection points with climbing carabiners:

  • Left attachment point
  • Right attachment point
  • Chain clip

I do not have a particular climbing carabiner brand I strongly recommend. I simply want properly rated climbing hardware rather than a flimsy accessory clip.

Weighted Vest: My Second Choice

My second choice is a weighted vest.

I use the MIR Pro Adjustable Weighted Vest.

I originally bought it so I could continue doing weighted pullups when gyms were closed during COVID.

I like it because it is:

  • Highly adjustable
  • Durable
  • Comfortable
  • Very stable

Mine holds 90 pounds, and MIR also makes heavier versions.

The major disadvantage is bulk.

Once a vest becomes heavy, it can restrict movement more than a dip belt.

It is also much less convenient to change the load between sets.

That is why I still prefer a dip belt for normal weighted pullup training.

Dumbbell Between the Feet

This is my least favorite option.

It works if you are just experimenting with weighted pullups, but I would not use it as a long-term setup.

The dumbbell is:

  • Unstable
  • Distracting
  • Difficult to load heavily
  • Harder to keep consistent from rep to rep

If weighted pullups are going to become a regular part of your training, I think a dip belt is worth buying.

How High Should the Plates Hang?

There is a balancing act.

If the plates hang too low, they tend to swing.

If they hang too high, the setup can become uncomfortable.

With multiple plates, hanging them excessively high can also allow the plates to pinch your thighs or groin together.

My preferred setup keeps the plates high enough to remain stable without crowding the body.

The exact position may depend on the plates available in your gym.

Plates with hand openings make chain routing easier.

Traditional plates with only a center hole may require the belt to hang somewhat lower.

Band-Resisted Weighted Pullups

One of my favorite advanced variations is using a dip belt with resistance bands.

This is not a band-assisted pullup.

The bands provide additional resistance.

Because the bands stretch more as you rise, the resistance increases toward the top of the pullup.

I particularly like this setup for training explosiveness and strength through the top portion of the movement.

How I Set It Up

I use a power rack.

From my perspective, I am facing the pullup bar with the rack uprights to my left and right. The safety bars run forward and backward on each side.

Then:

  1. Set the safety bars below you.
  2. Stretch one or more resistance bands horizontally from the left side of the rack to the right side, using the safety bars as anchors.
  3. Position the bands slightly in front of your body.
  4. Stand on a box so you can comfortably reach the pullup bar.
  5. Put on your dip belt.
  6. Pass the dip-belt chain underneath the stretched bands.
  7. Clip the chain back to the belt.
  8. Step off the box carefully.
  9. Lower yourself into the dead-hang position.

There should still be some band tension at the bottom.

As you perform the pullup and rise higher, the bands stretch farther and pull downward with greater force.

Progressing With Bands

I ramp band resistance similarly to the way I ramp plates.

A workout might progress through:

  • Bodyweight
  • Small band
  • Medium band
  • Large band
  • Small band plus large band

You can use one band or multiple bands.

The principle is the same: gradually increase the resistance.

I personally use Westside Barbell resistance bands. I trust their equipment and like supporting the gym, although this setup should work with many good resistance bands.

Important Safety Note

Do not simply let go of the pullup bar at the top.

The bands are pulling you downward and slightly forward.

If you suddenly release the bar, they can pull you toward the floor at an awkward angle.

Lower yourself under control before dismounting.

I consider that the most important safety rule for this variation.

What to Do When Progress Stalls

The first thing I check is form.

You may perform the same number of reps as last time while using:

  • Better range of motion
  • Less swing
  • Better control

That is still progress.

If the form is consistent and the numbers have genuinely stalled, my next move is usually to add volume.

I especially like backdown sets for this.

After your heavy work, reduce the weight and perform another productive set or two.

Sometimes Try a Heavier Weight

Progress does not always have to mean doing another rep at the exact same weight.

Suppose you have been stuck at:

+45 × 5

You could back the weight down and accumulate more volume.

But you could also occasionally try:

+55 pounds

Training at a slightly heavier load gives you a different challenge.

The point is not to change things randomly. The point is to continue giving yourself measurable opportunities to improve.

Treat Pullups Like a Strength Lift

The biggest change in my own pullup training was gradually treating pullups more like I would treat a barbell squat or bench press.

That means:

  • Tracking sets
  • Tracking reps
  • Adding load
  • Resting enough
  • Performing heavy work
  • Planning progression

People often assume that progress on a bodyweight exercise should primarily mean doing more and more repetitions.

I disagree.

Once bodyweight becomes easy enough, add weight.

There is no point where you are simply “strong enough” and progression should stop.

Keep getting stronger.

Weighted Pullups and Powerlifting

Heavy pullup training was also valuable during my powerlifting training.

A strong upper back matters during the bench press, and advanced bench press technique involves active use of the lats and upper back.

So I did not view pullups as something separate from my powerlifting.

Heavy pullups were part of building the upper-body strength I wanted for everything else.

Common Weighted Pullup Mistakes

Not Tracking Your Training

This is probably the biggest one.

You need to know what you did.

Record:

  • Added weight
  • Reps
  • Sets
  • Grip

Without that information, progression becomes guesswork.

Using Partial Reps

Partial reps are not automatically useless.

The problem is that inconsistent range of motion produces bad data.

Was that rep 60% of a full pullup?

75%?

90%?

Now comparing workouts becomes difficult.

Swinging and Kipping

The same issue applies to momentum.

Swinging does not mean your muscles suddenly stop working.

But how much did the swing help?

Did it effectively remove 20 pounds of difficulty? Forty-five?

You cannot know.

For strength progression, cleaner reps give you better information.

Holding a Dumbbell Between Your Feet for Too Long

This is fine for experimenting.

It should not be your permanent weighted-pullup setup.

Once you know weighted pullups are staying in your program, buy a belt.

Failing to Make Small Improvements

Progress does not need to be dramatic.

You do not need a huge personal record every week.

Add one rep.

Add five pounds.

Perform a cleaner set.

Add a backdown set.

Then do it again.

A Simple Weighted Pullup Program

For someone beginning weighted pullups:

Twice Per Week

Warmup

  • Bodyweight pullups: 1 × 10

Weighted pullups

  • Approximately 5 working sets
  • 3–10 reps
  • Stop at 10 reps or technical failure
  • Increase weight after a set of 10

Dumbbell rows

  • 3 × approximately 8

Optional curls

  • 2–3 sets

Rest around 2–3 minutes for normal sets and longer when needed for heavier work.

That is enough to build a very strong weighted pullup.

Final Thoughts

Weighted pullups are not a novelty exercise.

They are a serious strength movement, and I think they should be trained like one.

Keep your technique consistent.

Track your numbers.

Use equipment that lets you add load safely and conveniently.

Make small improvements.

And when the current weight becomes easy, add more.
